Organization Overview: Since 1893, Henry Street has delivered the most effective, compassionate and comprehensive services possible to residents of the Lower East Side. As a multifaceted not-for-profit, Henry Street provides innovative social services, arts programs and healthcare services from 17 locations throughout the Lower East Side. Building upon its legacy for innovation and effective programming, Henry Street has grown to offer more than 50 different programs, currently making it one of the most comprehensive settlement house in New York City, as well as one of the City’s largest social service agencies. Henry Street is governed by a 45-member Board of Directors and is supported by government grants and contracts, as well as foundation, corporate and individual support.
Education and Employment Services is an 8.2 million dollar division serving about 9000 people each year through a continuum of services from Early Childhood Education through Adult Workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. Education Services include an Early Learn Program, After School Programs (6 sites), 4 Day Camps, Youth Recreation, High School Initiatives including 2 Community Schools, and our Expanded Horizons College Success Program. Programming takes place within 3 community center sites and multiple school-based programs. Employment Services include walk-in employment services, employment services for a public housing population, ESL job readiness training, and employment services for youth including SYEP and Young Adult Internship and Adult Literacy Programs.
The Expanded Horizons College Success Program is a comprehensive eight-year program which is designed to ensure that high school students are college-ready and admitted to a college that fits their interests and abilities, and graduate from that institution on time. Our eight-year cohort-based model allows high school students to benefit from college readiness programming that includes SAT preparation, college readiness workshop, overnight college tours and career/college counseling. Designed as a program to help meet student financial need, Expanded Horizons students accrue scholarship dollars for every year they participate fully in the program to be used while in college.
-Supervise (2) College Access Coordinators.
-Advise high school students towards individualized personal post-secondary educational and career goals.
-Provide advisement in all aspects of the college application and financial aid process.
-Research and share information on scholarships, internships, and jobs for Expanded Horizons high school students.
-Provide early awareness counseling to approximately (30) 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
-Make college recommendations to a caseload of 15-20 high school seniors.
-Lead the coordination and attend day and overnight college tours to northeast colleges.
-Become familiar with the academic and social environments at the various colleges alumni are considering in an effort to recommend suitable matches.
-Manage and support the college admissions and matriculation process for all high school seniors.
-Develop and implement early college awareness programming for 9th and 10th grade participants.
-Recruit 9th and 10th students from partner high schools on the Lower East Side and neighboring communities.
-Completes monthly and quarterly reports.
-Contribute anecdotal and quantitative data for quarterly and funder reports.
-Collect and maintain accurate paper and electronic records of all students and activities.
-Be active in researching issues and trends in college admissions, higher education, and standardized testing.
-Ensure that all participants and prospective students have submitted all required paperwork for enrollment.
-Track all college applications, admissions offers, and final college decisions through Overgrad.
-Collaborate with Expanded Horizons family members and high school officials to ensure that students receive support throughout their high school career.
-Establish relationships with college admissions staff, NYS opportunity programs, other college-bound programs (CBO) and local high schools.
-Attends local monthly college access meetings and annual admissions conferences through the National Association of College Admissions -Counseling.
-Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
-Bachelor’s degree required with preference given to education and human services related fields; Masters degree preferred.
-Completion of 60 hour certificate course Foundation & Framework of College Access and Success Counseling through the OPTIONS Institute.
-Minimum of three (5) years experience in college access counseling with high school aged youth, preferably in New York City.
-Strong commitment to supporting the academic achievement and access to higher education of young adults who are low income, immigrants, and/or will be the first in their families to attend college.
-Understand intersectionality as it pertains to race, gender, class, privilege and other identities.
-Knowledge of CUNY, SUNY, HBCU, and Common application systems.
-Familiarity with the financial aid process which include the completion and submission of financial aid forms (FAFSA, TAP and CSS profile).
-Knowledge of application process for NYS opportunity programs.
Membership in/or active participation in the College Access Consortium of NY.
-Excellent skills in verbal and written communication, including effective platform delivery.
-The ability to develop goals and objectives.
-Demonstrate an understanding of and, practice the principles of positive youth development.
-Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
-Extensive knowledge of the financial, academic, and social skills necessary to be successful in college.
-Strong networking, influencing, and negotiating skills.
-Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing and presentation skills.
-Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suite, and Microsoft Outlook.
-Bilingual Spanish or Mandarin a plus.
