General Purpose:

In accordance with program regulations the Psychiatrist provide psycho-pharmacotherapy and other therapy to population of chronically, mentally ill patients and assist in interdisciplinary clinical team in monitoring client symptoms, stability and medication side effects.

Essential Functions:

Provide oversight of clinic from medical, neurobiological model of mental illness in conjunction with Program Director and clinical team of therapists, social workers, etc.
Listen to case summaries of all clients in “med rounds” and provide monitoring, clinical directives from medical perspective with respect to client stability, risk, medication issues, etc.
Provide psychotropic medications to remediate client psychiatric symptoms based in on-going assessments of benefit-risk ratios. Make meds adjustments accordingly.
Provide health information to clients, educate on risks versus benefits of meds, management of med side effects, interrelationship of physical/psychiatric well being. Individually and via groups.
Coordinate treatment with and communicate effectively with other clinical professionals (RN, social workers, etc.) “in-house” and also outside of program as needed (e.g. client primary physicians or other specialists).
Provide info to clinical team on newest developments in neuropsychiatry and possible applications to program.
Document all services provided legibly and according to regulations (e.g. OMH, best practices, etc.).

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

Must be a Medical Doctor, specializing in Psychiatry, with current license and approval by relevant A.M.A. boards and regulating/governing bodies. All relevant certificates must be current (e.g. controlled substance registrations from NYS Dept. of Health, Bureau of Controlled Substances, etc.).
Must have at least 5 years of experience in Day Treatment or similar (community meds) setting (e.g. partial hospital).

Scope of Responsibility & Positions Supervised:

Oversee clinical interdisciplinary team from medical model perspective (neurobiological) with some flexibility and knowledge with respect to other models of treatment for mental illness (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
Coordinate treatment with staff RN and provide medical oversight.
Maintain confidentiality of records, keep records up to date and maintain highest ethical/medical standards.
Provide oversight in medical rounds with respect to client readiness for discharge or need for hospitalization, special interventions, etc.
Communicate with other physicians and specialists as needed (e.g. in assessing MRI results, lab-work, etc.).

Special Working Conditions:

Direct and extensive work with psychosis. Important to maintain healthy clinical boundaries, deal with transference/counter-transference, insulate self from burnout.
