Team Leader -Behavioral Health Specialist (Monday to Friday 10am – 6pm)

Overview:

CASES' Court Employment Project (CEP) provides alternative to detention (ATD) and alternative to incarceration (ATI) services to youth ages 16-24 across the five boroughs. The mission of CEP is for youth to gain competence, confidence, positive connections with peers and adults, build character, receive support from caring adults, contribute to their communities, and live crime-free lives. Our services are youth development centered. We operate from the belief that if young people have mutually beneficial relationships with the people and institutions of their social world, they will be on the way to a hopeful future marked by positive contributions to self, family, community, and civil society. Our approach is distinguished by individualized case management, family engagement, supportive therapeutic counseling, evidence-based programming, and group activities that build positive peer associations and contribute to community development.
Under the direction of the Director of CEP, the Team Leader-Behavioral Health Specialist has multiple roles in supporting the Director in the day to day functions of a program site, supervision of case coordinators and providing direct clinical services to youth in the ATI. The role will be part of an interdisciplinary team with a director, team leader, case coordinators, substance use counselors and court representatives. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Team Leader-Behavioral Health Specialist will provide clinical services including individual therapy, administering assessment and facilitating weekly groups to youth involved in the justice system. The objectives of this role are to ensure participants receive services that are strengths-based, culturally-sensitive and adherent to the core principles of risk, need and responsivity to reduce recidivism, increase engagement in community treatment services and support participants to achieve their self-identified goals for treatment, recovery, rehabilitation, and crime-free community integration.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee case management in one program site including supervision, compliance to program goals and support in the day to day operations.
• Conduct substance use, mental health, and trauma screening and assessment
• Assess psychosocial needs communicating with collateral partners (school, family, community providers) to determine level of behavioral health and social needs of participants;
• Engage family and significant others in assessment process including conducting family conferences and home visits to assess home environment;
• Assess risk levels for criminal behavior using validated risk and need assessments and develop recommendations for needed treatment and rehabilitation services to address related risk and needs;
• Develop and review comprehensive individual service plans for participants with behavioral health needs in collaboration with participants, case coordinators, substance use counselors and families while considering court mandates and required supervision needs;
• Engage participants utilizing a recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approach;
• Manage caseload providing individual counseling utilizing cognitive behavioral strategies to address risk for criminal recidivism, psychosocial and treatment needs;
• Facilitate weekly group-based interventions including using Interactive Journaling;
• Provide the level of intensity of services based on participant needs and treatment plans;
• Collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team including case and family conferences, team meetings and in regularly scheduled supervision with Program Director,
• Utilize evidence-based approaches to treatment that respond to behavioral health needs, trauma, substance use, and criminal justice involvement;
• Provide crisis counseling and de-escalation support as needed;
• Accompany participant, as needed, to appointments in the community; advocate and support participants in case conferences with supports and services in the community;
• Develop partnerships and maintain relationships with community treatment providers and maintain regular and consistent contact with treatment providers serving participants;
• Ensure at least 75% of work time involves delivering direct face-to-face services to participants;
• Provide effective interventions ensuring at least 70% of caseload successfully complete their alternative-to-incarceration supervision with the Court Employment Project (CEP);
• Maintain up to date and detailed progress notes and relevant data in Salesforce.
• Assist Program Director in developing and implementing behavioral health procedure and policies and follow program policies and procedures;
• Provide culturally-competent services in accordance with CASES policies and practice;
• Attend and prepare for organization and team meetings and supervision sessions;
• Perform other duties as required by Program Director and Team Leader

Qualifications

• Masters in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or relevant degree. New York State Licensed required within one year of employment
• At least two years of experience providing services to youth and/or young adults with substance use, mental health or co-occurring disorders
• Supervisory experience
• Experience with using youth development precepts and motivational interviewing
• Experience providing cognitive behavioral therapy and evidence based treatment.
• Highly organized with attention to detail
• Excellent writing and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system, court processes and alternative to detention/incarceration services
• Spanish speaking a plus
