(CA), founded in 1974, is a progressive not-for-profit organization that expands opportunities for people living with mental health concerns to recover from trauma and discrimination through affordable housing, training, advocacy and healing-focused services. Our programs are spread across 20 locations and include over 1000 units of supportive housing in three boroughs, the Howie The Harp Advocacy Center, ThriveAtWork, Blueprint Supported Education, East Village Access—a PROS program, and a peer-driven Crisis Respite Center.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of
FORENSIC PEER SPECIALIST
to work in our location at Project Renewal and Bedford Hills Correctional Facility

This position is 24 hours per week, paid at an hourly rate of $14.00 with an excellent benefits package.

Position Overview
The Forensic Peer Specialist position is part of the STEP Program – the Safe Transition and Empowerment Program, a joint initiative of HTH and Project Renewal, funded through the NYS Office of Mental to assist women previously incarcerated at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility to more successfully transition back to their communities upon release from prison. Introducing inmates to the concepts of resiliency, self-help, recovery and peer support. The position functions as a part of the Forensic ICM Team at Project Renewal, delivering complementary peer services in prison and the community to individuals and groups. Essential job functions will include:; Escorting participants to appointments (shopping, entitlements, doctors’ appointments, etc.) so that they can obtain necessary resources following the release from prison; Facilitating relapse prevention groups; Guiding program participants in developing natural supports and accessing community-based resources to enhance support systems; Producing and maintaining thorough, accurate and timely documentation of services provided to program participants, monthly reports summarizing outcomes, activities and services; travel expenses and other records; Attending and participating in supervision consisting of task supervision with staff at Project Renewal’s Forensic ICM team and administrative-related supervision through HTH; Attending and participating in training and meetings held by CA and Project Renewal, as required.


Qualifications:
Qualified candidates must have an understanding, appreciation, and commitment to the philosophy and mission of Community Access. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED); Person highly knowledgeable about benefits preferred; Must be a graduate of HTH’s Peer Training Program; Personal lived experience with mental illness required, and history of incarceration and/or substance abuse preferred; Bilingual Spanish-speaking, preferred; Must be fingerprinted and cleared by the NY State Justice Center; Commitment to recovery oriented practices; Understanding of trauma informed practices; Must have successfully completed an internship, preferably in a correctional setting; Must have completed parole/probation; Able to meet requirements of the Department of Corrections and Project Renewal; Have a working knowledge of how to cultivate community resources; Be skilled in conflict mediation/negotiation and have a pro-active approach to problem solving; Good oral and written communication skills; Ability to utilize various computer programs, specifically Microsoft Word; Show initiative and be responsible for follow through; Ability to maintain confidential information, as related to position; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; Ability to work a flexible schedule, preferred.
