Department: Good Companions Senior Center (GCSC)
Start Date: As soon as possible
Hours: Full Time – Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Sunday coverage may be required)
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Program Overview: Good Companions is Henry Street Settlement’s multilingual and multicultural senior citizen center that has been serving the needs of the Lower East Side’s senior community for over 60 years by offering a variety of activities and social services. The staff speaks English, Chinese and Spanish The Center provides important nutritional information to enhance the health of seniors, and offers affordable hot lunches Sunday through Friday and dinners Monday through Friday. Seniors are encouraged to participate in health promotion and recreational activities, including health and wellness programs, parties, trips, arts and crafts, musical entertainment, recreation, nutrition presentations and educational seminars, and to take advantage of the two fitness rooms, complete with exercise machines and free weights. A bilingual Social Worker is also available to provide case management and information/referral services. The kitchen is responsible for preparing 112 meals for lunch, 80 meals for dinner Monday through Friday and 80 meals for our lunch program on Sundays. This position reports to the Food Services Manager.
Maintain general cleanliness of the kitchen in a safe and sanitary manner and take responsibility of the appropriate treatment of all equipment.
Assist in food prep (example: wash and prep fresh fruit and vegetables)
Ware washing (example: pots/pans, utensils, trays and other food service equipment)
Set up of dining room area on a daily basis with disposable cups and napkins, etc.
Assist in meal service as needed
Check and accept all deliveries, ensuring that everything ordered and invoiced has been received, then date and store deliveries
Rotate stored food to ensure First In, First Out
Kitchen, storage areas and walk- in floors must be free of debris and mopped on a daily basis or as needed
Mop kitchen, storage areas and walk-in floors on a daily basis or as needed
Check garbage bins periodically, empty when needed and move to trash compactor room
Daily/weekly wash down of garbage bins
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
High School Diploma or GED certificate preferred
Must be able to work in a high energy environment and have experience and general knowledge working in a kitchen
Must have general knowledge on kitchen sanitation guidelines in conjunction with NYS health code regulations
Must have NYC Food Handlers stamped photo license
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time as needed
Must be fluent in English and be able to communicate and understand directions; bilingual is a plus (Chinese/Spanish)
Ability to work with multi-cultural populations, predominately with seniors.
